Facts: Clipperton Island is an uninhabited island, named after John Clipperton, an English pirate who fought the Spanish during the 18th century who is said to have passed by the island. 1711- It was discovered by French discovers 1856 – claimed by United under Guano Islands Act of 1856. 1848-1849 – Mexico also claimed it due to activities undertaken.
Mexico and France signed a compromise in 1909, agreeing to submit the dispute over sovereignty over Clipperton Island to binding arbitration by King Victor Emanuel of Italy. In 1931 Victor Emanuel issued his arbitral decision in the Clipperton Island Case, declaring Clipperton to be a French possession.

Clipperton Island (French: Ile de Clipperton or Ile de la Passion, Spanish: Isla de la Pasion) is an uninhabited 6 km2 (2.3 sq mi) coral atoll in the eastern Pacific Ocean off the coast of Central America.
Clipperton Island was discovered by the pirate John Clipperton in the 18th century. It became French in 1855 and was seized by Mexico in 1897. After arbitration it was awarded to France, which took possesion of the island in 1935.
As in the Clipperton Island arbitration, in which the winning claim was based on the facts of the hoisting of a French flag and publication of the proclamation of sovereignty, it could in spe- cial circumstances be considered as sufficient to establish a valid title.
In 1958, Clipperton was visited by ornithologist Ken Stager of the Los Angeles County Museum.Appalled at the depredations visited by feral pigs upon the island’s Brown Booby and Masked Booby colonies (reduced to 500 and 150 birds, respectively), Stager procured a shotgun and proceeded to hunt down and kill all of Clipperton Island’s 58 pigs.
