The story of the Federal cavalry during the Civil War is not only the story of the development of raw recruits and officers from difficult beginnings to a finely honed and feared machine, but also the story of the evolution of an arm of the U.S.

The Civil War was the greatest cavalry war in American history, with more soldiers fighting from horseback during this conflict than any before or since. In a war with so much horror, on the field and in the hospitals, there was a desperate need for romance, for glamor.

Introduction To Civil War Cavalry. The History. On March 2, 1833, acting on a measure presented by Richard Johnson, Congress created the United States Regiment of Dragoons. With the creation of this unit, the U. S. Cavalry was born.(Urwin, 54) The size of the U. S. Regiment of Dragoons was fixed by Congress, at 34 officers and 1,715 men.
I would imagine this book is extremely rare, as the equipment, mission, tactics, and organization of the cavalry changed significantly between 1854 and 1861, and again between 1861 and 1864. Cooke wrote another manual in 1862, and yet another in 1864, and McClellan himself wrote one in 1862, so I’m sure this one disappeared fairly fast. Cooke wrote a cavalry tactics manual just prior to the Civil War that became the training and fighting textbook for American troopers from both sides. Cooke’s manual would be used in conjunction with an instruction manual titled “Instructions for Officers on Outpost and Patrol Duty,” required reading for all cavalry officers as early as September 1861.
This manual is the primary source of infantry drill in the Federal Army during the war. It was modified for the three band rifled musket from Hardee’s Infantry Tactics above. All three volumes are here, including the schools of the soldier, company, skirmishers, battalion, brigade, and corps d’armee. Gilham’s Volunteer’s Manual (1860)

It makes full use of The Official Records of the War of the Rebellion2, reprinted period military manuals, and material that is nearly contemporary to the Civil War. Whenever possible, Federal quartermasters and commissary officers present the solutions to logistics problems that they used during the war.
Other manuals of organization and drill were used, but “Hardee’s Tactics” continued to be the most popular and widely used manual throughout the war. Civil War Army Organization Total Union infantry, cavalry, and artillery by state
