Probably the issue that puzzles me most is the fact that the included cleaning rod is NO WAY long enough to clean the barrel on a Yugo SKS 59/66 A1 !!! The rod itself has an overall length of just under 40 cm (just over 15″). The barrel measures jut over 60 cm (~24″) from the breech face to the end of the muzzle/grenade launcher.
Yugoslavian SKS M-59/66 A1. Post by kyle » Mon Nov 01, Mugwug wrote: Correct me if I am wrong Kyle , but if I recall correctly the Yugo sks has a hook style latch to hold the bayonet into position when extended, and not a ring for the muzzle. It latches onto a ring just aft of the grenade
I used to hate SKS’s, and passed on the chance to buy one 12-13 yrs ago when the Chinese ones were $80. But at my local gun show the other day, someone was selling a huge stack of Yugo 59/66’s for $90 each, and I decided not to pass on it this time. A few years back I started a survey to collect data on Yugo SKS rifles and log book entries. With some help I was able to come up with a correlation between the serial number letter prefix and the year of manufacture in the logbooks. I have also come up with a pattern of how the Yugo SKS design evolved.
Description: Yugo SKS Rifle 59/66, cal. 7.62×39, unissued, imported by PW Arms, Made by Zastava. Has a 23″ barrel, grenade launcher attachment, milled receiver, tangent rear sight, folding blade bayonet, fixed mag holds 10 rounds, cleaning kit, ammo pouch, oil bottle and original sling.
Stripper Clips, Stocks, Pistol Grips & More. Used by over 42 militaries in the last 60+ years, the SKS is a classic war rifle. Older than the AK-47, the SKS was originally designed out of the necessity to provide ground troops a lighter rifle, a smaller round, less recoil, higher muzzle velocity, and better accuracy for medium range engagements.
As more M.70s came into service, the Yugoslavs sold many of their surplus Yugo M59 and M59/66 rifles to customers around the world. The Yugoslavversion of the 7.62x39mm—the 7.62mm Metak Yugo M59—consisted of a rimless, bottlenecked case loaded with a boat-tail, 123-grain, jacketed, steel-core bullet moving at approximately 2,400 fps.
The night sights on my yugo are totally useless, they glow for about a second. You can get a dot sight and mount for 50 bucks! OK guys I’m thinking of getting a sks from samco, Im set on a 59/66 but im not sure the night sigts of the A1 are worth the extra 50 bucks. All I really plan to do

The Model 59 was accepted in to service in 1959, going by the naming. But, production didn’t start till several years later, in the mid 1960’s. What is estimated to be the first production rifles, is known as the long barreled Yugoslavian SKS.

Fakes and representative reproductions will be easy to make and will certainly show up in the collectors market. Inter-ordnance advertised and sold a Yugo M59/66 SKS Sniper Rifle with a 6×42 Russian sniper scope mounted. These are nothing more than sporters made up by Inter-Ordnance for the American market but nice rifles just the same.
