I am following instructions from a book to finish my walnut gunstock. After staining which I have already done, the instructions call for tung oil to be applied to seal the wood followed by Tru-Oil. The gunstock finishing instructions say to saturate the wood until it can take no more tung oil, then allow to DRY.
Get your gloves on and hang the stock from the ceiling. Break out some tru oil and with one finger apply the tru oil in a circular motion all over your stock. Be sure not to use so much Tru oil that it ends up dripping. The first coat the wood should soak up fairly quickly, which is wonderful! Allow the tru oil to dry for 8 hrs.
Re: Tru-oil gun stock finish improvziv, as a couple of other posts noted you can seal with shellac before using the tru oil if you want the grain filled more. It is usual to cut the shellac with some alcohol first if you do it that way or make a light mix if you use flakes.

t7731, A modern “oil” finish is not likely a true oil finish at all. Linseed oil is worthless on a gunstock and takes forever to dry. They are “modified” oils. With urethane, driers and other secret stuff. Cheap products like Frombys are not true oils either and I wouldn’t use it on a gunstock. A common durable finish is Birchwood Casey Tru-Oil. For non-stained woods you will need to use the wet-sanding technique by using Tru-Oil Gun Stock Finish. If your wood is stained, you will need to use the Sealer and Filler to fill the grain.
What is the best way to buff a tru-oil finish? I have built tru-oil on mahogany tele, I lightly rubbed it out with 0000 steel wool. I tried buffing it with fine cut cleaner but I can’t seem to get it real shiny and the compound leaves a residue on the body.
