Don’t let anyone sell you a TK-430, TK-480, TK-930, TK-940 or TK-980 radio as they are all 800 MHz and will not work on amateur 900 MHz. Kenwood hasn’t yet imported an amateur 900 MHz radio so the USA hams that choose Kenwood are forced into using surplus commercial radios – the TK-431 and TK-481 handhelds and the TK-931, TK-941 and TK-981 mobiles.
Odd TK-840 programming issue – posted in Technical Discussion: Hello all, (I posted this to Radio Reference too, today. Ill also cross-post the solution for folks.)This has to be a common problem, as all four of my 840s exhibit this issue.I have a set of frequencies (groups) set up in KPG-25D in two systems. Software is working great in DosBox.
I think the T840n is just a narrowband version of the TK-840. It should use the same software and cable, KPG-25D software and KPG-4 cable (or aftermarket equivalent). The software runs on DOS. I had an 840 about 10 years ago, and it worked on the ham freqs, at least the ones I had programmed in. Don’t know how low it might go, however.

I provide KPG-25D programming software on the Bootable DOS USB stick with the cable and installation instructions. The Customer (factory or OEM) Programming Software (CPS) that supports these radio models only works on native DOS, or DOS started from Windows 3.1 or Windows 95.

The issue isn’t in the KPG-25D software, that I can tell, since the config is fine, and it writes to the radios without any issues. The problem shows up when I’m flipping through the “groups” in the TK-840 itself. Once I get up to #12, the TA icon shows up.
