In general, the MC-808 is not real-time. You can either play or record patterns. What I have done is deactivated the metronome (for TR-REC anyway) and if you always record, you basically have the tribe series of functionality–for the most part.

Blame Roland for their dumb repetitive naming system, but the MC-909 and MC-808 are rompler-style grooveboxes, not drum machines like the TR-909 and TR-808. I should have looked a bit better i’ve got the same thing with the 303 versions
