    Curlew River is often neglected or dismissed as a minor work. To my mind it’s a gem that combines Japanese Noh conventions with Britten’s love of medieval monastic semi liturgical “drama” and his favorite setting of Norfolk. As music, it’s deceptively simple but I find it beautiful.
