    William Butler Yeats’ “Easter 1916” is strong but not convincing to me. He is too harsh towards his county fellows. Doubtlessly, violence is awful. But before chide the Irish nationalists for using violence, one should put himself in their shoes and try to understand why they act so desperately.
    Easter, 1916: The poem, Easter, 1916, starts in a traditional tone, “I have met them at close of day, Coming with vivid faces, From counter or desk among grey, Eighteenth-century houses.” It shows how Yeats, before their death, had known many of the ones that participated in the conflicts, the Rising.
    After recognizing the heroism of Easter week, Yeats wonders if the sacrifice of the martyrs was necessary. But for Yeats it was a needless death, i.e. a death which did not achieve any results. At least one thing is certain that England still remains in power over Ireland after all.
