Expressed Sequence Tags (ESTs) are short (usually <1000 bp), single-pass sequence reads from mRNA (cDNA). Typically they are produced in large batches. They represent a snapshot of genes expressed in a given tissue and/or at a specific developmental stage. They are tags (some coding, others not) of expression for the cDNA library of interest.
Expressed Sequence Tags (ESTs) are short, usually unedited sequences obtained by single-pass sequencing of cDNA clones from any cDNA library. Analyzing and comparing ESTs can provide information on gene expression, function and evolution.
This yields a library of complementary DNAs (cDNAs) that correspond to the genes expressed in that sample. Sequencing a short segment (<100 bases) at one or both ends of each cDNA produces a “tag” with enough information to identify the expressed gene: these are called expressed sequence tags (ESTs).
expressed sequence tag (EST) a partial GENE sequence, usually from the end of a cDNA clone, that is unique to a gene and that can be used to identify it during GENOME analysis. The partial sequence of the cDNA provides a tag to locate the position of the expressed gene (from which mRNA and hence the cDNA is prepared), even though the identity of the gene itself may not be known. EST (expressed sequence tag): A unique stretch of DNA within a coding region of a gene that is useful for identifying full-length genes and serves as a landmark for mapping. An EST is a sequence tagged site (STS) derived from cDNA. An STS is a short segment of DNA which occurs but once in the genome

Expressed sequence tags (ESTs) represent the expressed portion of a genome, so they have proven to be useful tool for gene identification and confirmation of gene predictions.

The Tags panel allows you to view and edit tags in the logical structure tree, or tags tree, of a PDF. In the Tags panel, tags appear in a hierarchical order that indicates the reading sequence of the document. The first item in this structure is the Tags root. All other items are tags and are children of the Tags root.
Expressed sequence tags (ESTs) are partial sequences from the extremities of complementary DNA (cDNA) resulting from a single pass sequencing of clones from cDNA libraries, and different ESTs can

Expressed Sequence Tags database. What is dbEST? dbEST (Nature Genetics 4:332-3;1993) is a division of GenBank that contains sequence data and other information on “single-pass” cDNA sequences, or “Expressed Sequence Tags”, from a number of organisms. A brief account of the history of human ESTs in GenBank is available (Trends Biochem.
