I regularly teach a knot theory class. Every time, students ask about applications. I have two off-the-cuff replies when students ask. The first is that knot theory is a treasure chest of examples for several different branches of topology, geometric group theory, and certain flavours of algebra.
4/19: Knots and Graphs and Physics. 4/21: Last Lecture. Lectures notes on knot theory. Talk to Chris if you’re uncomfortable with group theory. There are going to be two projects (long and short) – we’ll start breaking up in to groups to work on those starting the second week of February.
Formal definitionEdit. A knot is an embedding of the circle (S1) into three-dimensional In graph theory terms, a regular projection of a knot, or knot diagram is thus a quadrivalent planar graph with One of Smale’s theorems is that when one deals with knots in co-dimension greater than two, even Formal Language and Automata Theory is designed to serve as a textbook for undergraduate students of B..E, B.Tech. “Title for Oxford Anglo-Catholic Novel: Incense and Insensibility.” Anthony Powell’s writer’s notebook, composed over forty years, is wonderfully witty and a fascinating This superb atlas
Formal Knot Theory is primarily about a reformulation of the Alexander polynomial as a state summation. This means that we shall give a Ten years after the publication of Formal Knot Theory, a planar graph version of the Clock Theorem was obtained independently by James Propp [24].
Facts about the state model, the Clock Theorem (that makes this model tick) and relations with other state models such as the bracket polynomial, are discussed. This paper will appear in the forthcoming Dover republication of Formal Knot Theory.

This exploration of combinatorics and knot theory is geared toward advanced undergraduates and graduate students. Featured topics include state, trails, and the clock theorem; state polynomials and the duality conjecture; knots and links; axiomatic link calculations; spanning surfaces; the genus of
This well-written and engaging volume, intended for undergraduates, introduces knot theory, an area of growing interest in contemporary mathematics. Subsequent chapters guide the reader to discover the formal definition of a knot, families of knots and links, and various knot notations.
Virtual Knot Theory. Article (PDF Available) in European Journal of Combinatorics 20(7):663-691 · October 1999 with 102 Reads. This paper is an introduction to the theory of virtual knots. It is dedicated to the memory of Francois Jaeger.
In topology, knot theory is the study of mathematical knots. While inspired by knots which appear in daily life, such as those in shoelaces and rope

Formal Knot Theory (Dover Books on Mathematics). Louis H. Kauffman. This volume is an introduction to mathematical knot theory – the theory of knots and links of simple closed curves in I had always felt the need to understand knot theory or at least to have an introductory knowledge of it.
