A “Joule Thief” is a simple voltage booster circuit. It can increase the voltage of power source by changing the constant low voltage signal into a series of rapid pulses at a higher voltage. You most commonly see this kind of circuit used to power LEDs with a “dead” battery.
To make a Joule Thief battery charger is a quick and easy project. Here is the Joule Thief battery charger schematic:(to view full size images click image then click image on following page) Joule Thief Battery Charger Schematic. I am in the process of building a battery charger this week and will put data about this project as I charge batteries.
Conclusion: While the “simple” joule thief is easier to make, one can make the joule thief more efficient (use less current), by removing some windings from the inductor that goes to the base of the transistor. The best in this case turned out to be 8 loops by 20 loops, with the eight loop end going to the base of the transistor.
The conventional Joule thief wastes about half of the power, so if you can use the supply voltage directly without the Joule Thief, it can double the battery life. If the supply voltage is above 3.5 volts, then the LED may be connected directly to the supply with just a simple current limiting resistor.
A Joule Thief is a simple step-up converter with which you can drive a 3.6V LED with a 1.5V battery even if it is spending the last drops of its life. It merely consists of a transistor, a transformer and a resistor. The circuit is very forgiving especially concerning the number of coils of the transformer. But I was wondering if there is a way to precicely calculate the voltage produced. I

Hacking an LED solar garden light. You can file this blog entry under exploring interesting bits of electronics hidden in everyday household items much like these two previous entries on using coin cell batteries and flickering LED candles.Solar rechargeable LED garden or pathway stake lights have become very inexpensive and common place. Just about every household gadget we own runs on 1.5 volt batteries of one size or another. Wouldn’t it be great if you could reuse all of those dead AA, AAA, and D batteries after they’ve passed on? It turns out you can make a simple circuit called a “Joule Thief” to reanimate the undead flesh of your deceased batteries and create a zombie battery.

Joule Thief 3.0 Introduction to the Joule Thief 3.0 Kit Thank you for purchasing the Joule Thief 3.0. With the success and popularity of our Joule Thief 1.0 and 2.0 kits, we decided to add a third. Why? Because three is better than two, right? I guess. But the real reason is that we wanted to design a Joule Thief circuit that had some power to it.

Making a Simple Joule Thief (made Easy): Today I am showing you how to make a very simple joule thief. A joule thief has many applications, the best gadget that I made with was a “Water Powered Lamp”, soon I’m going to post on a guide about it but first I need to post this guide. I used
The Joule Thief gets the last few % of the available power out of a almost dead battery. Not worth the trouble A Switch-Mode Power-Supply boost dc-to-dc Converter (the proper name for a Joule Thief) is beneficial if it is configured to drive a LED in constant-current mode while the input voltage can vary over a wide range
