Mitre Join. As a rule we would recommend only utilising butt joins to join your wooden worktops. However, if a mitre join must be used – on rare occasions such as if your worktop has a radius – you must ensure that the ‘hockey stick’ does not extend more than the 10mm bull-nose radius. Start from the left of your kitchen and work clockwise around it. Measure the length of the first piece and overcut it by at least 70mm (use a jigsaw) to allow for a 20mm overhang and an extra 50mm for routing Step 2: Measure and cut the second piece of worktop to length, again leaving at least 70mm extra.
He may have in mind finishing off with one of these which used to be very common before the introduction of routers and post formed joints: I have found that a chippie or kitchen fitter will offer to do a router based joint for a little extra to cover the cost of hiring the tool or buying the bit. The carpenters did a decent job of the kitchen but I’m unconvinced by how they sealed the joint to stop water going into the joint. Underneath the worktop they cut round holes with a channel and did a lovely joint to pull the two worktops together. Then they put clear silicone into the joint and tightened it.

A mason’s mitre joint is the most commonly-used method for joining two laminate kitchen worktops. This joint is also known as a butt and scribe joint or a hockey stick joint (the latter term springing from the fact that the joint features a curved cut at one end, and as such resembles the shape of a hockey stick).
im finding I have a problem with a worktop joint in the kitchen. There is a small gap of only about 1mm at the widest, but it’s been enough to let some water in and raise each side of the worktop. After drying out has gone down pretty much flat but I was wondering best way to fix so it doesn’t happen again.
