Colonization. MRSA bacteria often live in nasal passages for years without ever showing any symptoms. In fact, the vast majority of hospital workers are colonized with MRSA in the nose, meaning that the bacteria have an established colony, but are not spreading or causing active infection.
Laboratory methods. Nasal MRSA testing was performed by swabbing both anterior nares; the swab was processed by using the BD-GeneOhm real-time PCR test (Becton Dickinson, Franklin Lakes, NJ) (6, 7).We modified the preanalytical specimen processing to facilitate high-volume testing ().In our center, we have found this assay to have a sensitivity of 98.2% and a specificity of 97.5% ().
To determine whether you are a carrier of the bacteria methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus A nasal swab is collected by rotating a swab inside each nostril. Occasionally, a swab of a wound infection site or skin lesion is collected. Molecular tests for MRSA screening can detect

The Profend Nasal Decolonization Kit can be used on patients who have tested positive for S. aureus and/or MRSA. As an alternative to a “test and treat” strategy, the ease and speed of application and economical design make Profend suitable for universal decolonization of all patients, saving time and money spent on patient testing.
Insert the swab into the anterior nare (nostril) (Fig 3). Sweep upwards towards the top of the nare (Fig 4). Repeat the procedure with the same swab in the other nare. Without contaminating swab, place in the culture medium provided (Fig 5). Provide the patient with tissues as required. Dispose of waste. Remove apron and gloves. Wash hands.
The Joint Commission and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention would like to thank Copan Diagnostics for their contribution in producing these instructional videos. This acknowledgement First, know that in most studies about 10 – 18% of us will have a positive nasal swab for Staph aureus, meaning we are a carrier of that bacteria in our noses. The medical community has spent the last few years trying to answer whether Bactroban 2% ointment used twice a day for 5 days in your nostrils prior to surgery prevents surgical site
