Some outliers show extreme deviation from the rest of a data set. In these cases we can take the steps from above, changing only the number that we multiply the IQR by, and define a certain type of outlier. If we subtract 3.0 x IQR from the first quartile, any point that is below this number is called a strong outlier.
In statistics, an outlier is a data point that differs significantly from other observations. An outlier may be due to variability in the measurement or it may indicate experimental error; the latter are sometimes excluded from the data set. An outlier can cause serious problems in statistical analyses.
An outlier is an extreme value that differs greatly from other points in a data set. Outliers can distort statistical analyses in a number of ways. Outliers can distort statistical analyses in a

As a generalization of Tiku’s (1975, 1977) univariate statistic, we propose a statistic g for testing a specified number of outliers in multivariate data; g is the ratio of the product of robust estimators (Tiku, 1980) to the product of ordinary estimators of the scale parameters.
Another monograph exclusively on outlier methods by Doug Hawkins was also published at that time. However Barnett and Lewis gave the first comprehensive and unified account of the existing literature. The second edition published in 1984 provided an update and added chapters on outliers in spatial data and outliers in time series. 206 Copyrigh LA ncorporated Editorial Handling Those Pesky Statistical Outliers A recent experience of mine (C.R.K.) when exploring a secondary data set was the impetus for this editorial.
The outlier is identified as the largest value in the data set, 1441, and appears as the circle to the right of the box plot. Outliers may contain important information: Outliers should be investigated carefully. Often they contain valuable information about the process under investigation or the data gathering and recording process.
