In 1978, Perec won the prix Medicis for Life: A User’s Manual (French title, La Vie mode d’emploi), possibly his best-known work. The 99 chapters of this 600 page piece move like a knight’s tour of a chessboard around the room plan of a Paris apartment building, describing the rooms and stairwell and telling the stories of the inhabitants.

Both these novels were written before Perec had any contact with the Ouvroir de litterature potentielle, or OuLiPo – indeed, before OuLiPo was known outside of a tiny circle. While knowing of Perec’s constraints and plan in the structure of the novel can add considerably to a reader’s experience, it is not necessary to even be aware of them to read Life: A User’s Manual with enjoyment. The central plot of the book is the tale of Bartlebooth, an extremely wealthy English resident of 11 Rue Simon-Crubellier.
