Hi I want to buy a new hard drive but my motherboard is SATA 2. Most of the hard drives at decent prices are SATA 3 so I was wondering if a SATA 3 hard drive would work on a SATA 2 motherboard? If not does anyone know any decent SATA 2 hard drives, looking for 2tb and 7200 rpm if possible.
It will limit the “maximum” throughput. NB there are 8 bits in a byte (not 10) so crunch numbers accordingly. Be aware that the speeds quoted by the manufacturer are “up to” and not always experienced. You will saturate the SATA2 bandwidth most of
SATA-3 is reverse compatible with SATA-2 and 1 ports. Motherboard may have SATA-2 support and you put SATA-3 hard drive but it would operate within SATA-2 speed only. changing hard disk ( sata II to sata III)

SATA3 hard disk performs much slower on SATA2 motherboard, and I have just confirmed that in my little experiment. I took WD5000AAKX SATA3 hard disk and tested it on Asus M4N78 SE motherboard with SATA2 controller. Then I have measured time needed to copy a 700 MB simple DivX movie file.
This weekend I installed my new Asrock 980DE3/U3S3 motherboard. I connected both my Samsung 840 SSD and 2 Samsung HDD’s. SSD = Sata 3 HDD’s both on Sata2 ports When booting, only the sata 2 ported disks are used; in BIOS also the SSD can’t be selected (while – of course – my SSD is my bootdisk).
I think it may be treated as a sanity check thread Should anyone use a 2TB or 3TB 2.5″ HDD with the X9DRL-3F SAS/SATA2 ports – please post Long story short: can one safely use X9DRL-3F’s SCU’s SAS/SATA2 ports for 2-3TB 2.5″ SATA drives? I’ve seen posts in our forums giving warnings about some SAS1 backplanes and some SAS1 hardware in general (including the hardware recommendation guide).
Is there a noticeable difference in user experience between sata 2 and sata 3 for SSDs? I have an 840 Pro but I’m on an older system that I build before sata 3 existed. I was going to upgrade to a skylake platform, but realized I could just install a USB 3.0 PCI card and upgrade my CPU to an x5650/70 and I’d be pretty much set except for sata 3.
I have been investigating a bit because I want to update my hard disk to an SSD, having asus ipibl-lb (benicia) motherboard and I think, the only way possible, subject to the specification that it has two sata ports 3, I believe and I do not know if I am right, that those 2 ports – sata 3 are the 2x ports (pci-e x1 rev 2.0) and be forced to

I guess the support is there , I have an sata2 motherboard and cables, but really weirdly the HDD didn’t contain any SATA3 cables , i don’t need them but i guess it would be a plus, anyways , it’s just a straight plug in with the yellow cable , nothing else?
I’ve got one open SATA 3, two open SATA 2 and an open mSATA(SATA 2) on my motherboard and I’m wondering if I’ll see any benefit of having BFD audio samples on a SATA3 hard drive/SSD over SATA2? Anyone know? Would it be overkill? I trigger BFD from a Roland V-Drum TD-15KV set and record to PT HD10 via USB2
