You can request Fisher’s exact test for general tables by specifying the FISHER option in the TABLES or EXACT statement. For one-way frequency tables, the CHISQ option provides a chi-square goodness-of-fit test. The other chi-square tests and statistics described in this section are computed only for two-way tables.
Perfect for statistics courses, dissertations/theses, and research projects. Our Statistical Test Selector helps you to select the correct statistical tests to analyse your data, before our step-by-step SPSS Statistics guides show you how to carry out these statistical tests using SPSS Statistics, as well as interpret and write up your results.
The Fisher’s Exact Test. Fisher’s exact test is particularly appropriate when dealing with small samples. This section only covers test on a 2 by 2 table. That is, there are two variables, each has two categories. Comparing to the contingency chi-square test, Fisher’s exact test is to exaclty calculate the p-value rather than being based on an
StATS: Fisher’s Exact Test (created 2000-08-23). Dear Professor Mean, What is Fisher’s Exact Test and when should I use it? Fisher’s Exact test is a procedure that you can use for data in a two by two contingency table. It is an alternative to the Chi-square test.
Fisher’s exact test is more accurate than the chi-square test or G-test of independence when the expected numbers are small. I recommend you use Fisher’s exact test when the total sample size is less than 1000, and use the chi-square or G-test for larger sample sizes.
I am running cross-tabs between an ordinal and a nominal variable, checking ‘chi-square’ in the ‘statistics’ sub-menu, however the output is not producing a Fisher’s Exact Test (I have three cell counts < 5). Any ideas? Thanks.
Hi, I am new to this list. I am trying to analyze a relationship between two nominal variables each with more than two levels. I can’t use Pearson’s Chi-Square because more than 20% of the cells have expected counts less than 5. However, I can’t do a Fisher’s Exact Test because it’s larger than a 2×2 table and SPSS will not allow that unless I get the Exact Tests add-on Module, which I’m not
I am trying to run fisher’s exact test to see if there are any differences between two categorical variables. var # 1–>Collection_Center=5 categories. var # 2–>Education= 7 categories . B/c the frequencies in the cross tabs for these 2 variables were < 5, I decided to run a Fisher’s exact est instead of a chi-square test for independence.
The Fisher’s exact test is used when you want to conduct a chi-square test, but one or more of your cells has an expected frequency of less than five. Remember that the chi-square test assumes that each cell has an expected frequency of five or more, but the Fisher’s exact test has no such assumption and can be used regardless of how small The best resource I’ve ever seen for exact tests (and there are many of them, not just Fisher) is the manual for StatXact software. It’s a standalone stat package for exact and non-parametric tests-and its manual is extremely helpful in describing not only the software, but the statistics for each test.

/METHOD=EXACT. The result labeled as Fisher’s Exact test in the output is in fact the Fisher-Freeman-Halton Test. Note that a chi-square value is not calculated or printed for this test, although it was requested by the chi-square check box or the CHISQ keyword. An exact 2-sided significance is printed.
