Several people have asked me to comment on the recent movie, “Left Behind”, so I rented and watched the video version of the movie.Before I present my thoughts, I need to make four statements. First, even though the story line in this movie is a work of fiction, it should not be regarded as “just another movie”.
The word “rapture” comes from the Latin word “rapio” which means to take away by force. The benefits of an early rapture are obvious. Those leaving the earth will avoid tremendous suffering and persecution. Jesus and Paul used the words “caught up” and “taken” to refer to rapture.
The Left Behind theology has Jesus taking some people to heaven, but only for a few years, after which they all come back to the earth. That is what was taught by John Nelson Darby. Even though he is not mentioned in the Left Behind books or movies, his ministry is a basis for the modern rapture theory.
Moses declared to Pharaoh the terms of their departure to serve the LORD. Even down to the Israelites’ cattle, the LORD would not leave an “hoof behind” (Exodus 10:26). Just so, our LORD will not suffer there to be a single honest-hearted Christian left behind at the Pre-Tribulational Rapture.
