Linus Carl Pauling (February 28, 1901 – August 19, 1994) was an American quantum chemist and biochemist. He was also acknowledged as a crystallographer, molecular biologist, and medical researcher. Pauling is widely regarded as the premier chemist of the twentieth century.
The development of an accurate electronegativity scale was one of Linus Pauling’s many major contributions to the study of chemistry. In this two part series, we’ll first look at the electronegativity research that preceded Pauling’s breakthrough, before analyzing the details of the scale that Pauling
There are a number of ways to produce a set of numbers which represent electronegativity scales. The Pauling scale is perhaps the most famous. Linus Pauling noticed that the bond energy E(AB) in a molecule AB is always greater than the mean of the bond energies E(AA) + E(BB)
When Linus Pauling died on Aug. 19, 1994, the world lost one of its greatest scientists and humanitarians and a much respected and beloved defender of civil liberties and health issues. Because of his dynamic personality and his many accomplishments in widely diverse fields, it is hard to define
Linus Carl Pauling. Pauling, a Nobel laureate and prolific researcher, made significant contributions to our understanding of chemical bonding and structure.
Thus Pauling scale is not an absolute scale of electronegativity. Another scale, which is introduced by Mulliken, is based on the properties of atoms. An atom with high ionization energy and high electron affinity is less likely to loss an electron, while it is bonded to another atom, whereas it is more likely
Pauling scale. Thread starter pearbear21. Now, what I need to know is HOW Pauling developed his scale mathematically and in case it is as arbitrary as it seems, I would like to know of any other valid measurements of electronegativity that have come to be.
