Automatic Transmission Types Explained: CVT, DSG, Tiptronic, Dual-Clutch, Automated-Manual Transmission By Philipp Meister Last updated Mar 1, 2018 8 A transmission (or gearbox) is a bridge between the engine and the drive wheels of a vehicle. Quaife’s motorsport gearbox range includes complete replacement in-line, transaxle and four-wheel drive transmissions, offering five, six and seven-speeds depending on application, with a choice of synchromesh or dog engagement and helical or straight cut (spur) gears.
Holinger Engineering has been designing and manufacturing high precision components for motor racing for decades. Specialising in transmissions, we manufacture a range of gearboxes and associated products, from stand-alone bespoke designs right through to gear sets for existing production cars.
The SMG II Drivelogic is BMW’s second generation of their Sequential Manual Gearbox offered in the E46 M3 (and possibly some other models that don’t come to mind at the moment). It’s not a different transmission though. It’s the same manual gearbox that, instead of having the clutch foot
Manual vs Paddle-Shift Gearboxes. while the MR sports a 6-speed twin-clutch sequential gearbox called TC-SST (Twin Clutch Sport Shift Transmission) that can be actuated via steering wheel
A bolt on sequential gearbox conversion for ford t56 and tr6060 gearbox. This is the simplest most effective way to convert a standard gearbox to sequential shift. The design is strong and reliable allowing use in everything from high power endurance racing cars to daily driven street car.
In the automotive world, six-speed refers to a transmission with six forward gears. The most common six-speed transmissions are traditional manual units where the driver actuates a clutch with her foot while shifting through the gears. In more recent times, six-speed automatic and sequential-manual transmissions have
Due to the very nature of racing and the inherent danger associated with it, we (Jerico® Performance Products, a Division of Hemmingson Enterprises, Inc.) disclaim any responsibility for injury, loss of life, or loss of property resultant from direct or indirect use of our products.
A sequential manual transmission is not to be confused with a “tiptronic” sort of automatic transmission. The tiptronic system may duplicate the shift lever motion of a sequential gearbox. However, because a tiptronic transmission is an automatic transmission at its core, it still has the torque converter and usually does not shift as quickly.
The dual-clutch automatic is a development of the sequential manual transmission (SMT), which is essentially a fully automated manual transmission with a computer-controlled clutch, intended to deliver stick-shift performance with automatic convenience.
It’s not a sequential gearbox in the traditional sense of the word. For all intents and purposes you have a plain old manual gearbox, except you’re not operating the clutch, a computer is. Same idea with VW/Audi’s DSG, Porsche’s PDK, and all sorts of myriad other manufacturer’s transmissions.
