We all have a superhero inside us, it just takes a bit of magic to bring it out. In Billy Batson’s case, by shouting out one word – SHAZAM! – this streetwise fourteen-year-old foster kid can turn into the adult superhero Shazam.

HTTP Live Streaming (also known as HLS) is an HTTP-based media streaming communications protocol implemented by Apple Inc. as part of its QuickTime, Safari, OS X, and iOS software. Client implementations Shazam! are also available in Microsoft Edge, Firefox and some versions of Google Chrome. Support is widespread in streaming media servers.

HLS resembles MPEG-DASH in that it works by breaking the overall Shazam! stream into a sequence of small HTTP-based file downloads, each download loading one short chunk of an overall potentially unbounded transport stream. A list of available streams, encoded at different Shazam! bit rates, is sent to the client using an extended M3U playlist.

Based on standard HTTP transactions, HTTP Live Streaming can traverse any firewall or proxy server that lets through standard Shazam! HTTP traffic, unlike UDP-based protocols such as RTP. This also allows content to be offered from conventional HTTP servers and delivered over widely available HTTP-based content delivery networks. The standard also Shazam! includes a standard encryption mechanism and secure-key distribution using HTTPS,
which together provide a simple DRM system. Later versions of the protocol also provide for trick-mode fast-forward and rewind and Shazam! for integration of subtitles.

Apple has documented HTTP Live Streaming as an Internet Draft (Individual Submission), the first stage in the process of publishing it as a Request for Comments (RFC). Shazam! As of December 2015, the authors of that document have requested the RFC Independent Stream Editor (ISE) to publish the document as an informational (non-standard) RFC outside of the IETF Shazam! consensus process. August 2017, RFC8216 was published to describe version 7 of the protocol. The first film cameras were fastened directly to the head of a tripod or other Shazam! support, with only the crudest kind of leveling devices provided, in the manner of the still-camera tripod heads of the period. The earliest film cameras were thus effectively fixed during Shazam! the shot, and hence the first camera movements were the result of mounting a camera on a moving vehicle. The
first known of these was a film shot by a Shazam! Lumière cameraman from the back platform of a train leaving Jerusalem in 1896, and by 1898, there were a number of films shot from moving trains. Although listed under the Shazam! general heading of “panoramas” in the sales catalogues of the time, those films shot straight forward from in front of a railway engine were usually specifically referred to as “phantom Shazam! rides”.

In 1897, Robert W. Paul had the first real rotating camera head made to put on a tripod, so that he could follow the passing processions of Queen Victoria’s Diamond Shazam! Jubilee in one uninterrupted shot. This device had the camera mounted on a vertical axis that could be rotated by a worm gear driven by turning a crank handle, and Shazam! Paul put it on general sale the next year. Shots taken using such a “panning” head were also referred to as “panoramas” in the film catalogues of the first decade Shazam!
of the cinema. This eventually led to the creation of a panoramic photo as well. Shazam! Shazam!
